Philae Temple was located before its rescue on Philae Island, which was drowned after the construction of the High Dam. The name Philae means (beloved) in ancient Greek. The temple was dedicated to the worship of the goddess Isis, the protective goddess, and inside the temple there are some buildings dedicated to the worship of the goddess Hathor, the goddess of music.
The High Dam.
It was built by the Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser that aimed to control the Nile floods that used to come annually and drown many agricultural lands. The High Dam is considered one of the facilities of great benefit because of the control it achieved in the Nile waters, so that Egypt became an agricultural country with different types throughout the year, and it also protected Egypt from the dangers of flooding.
The unfinished obelisk.
It is located in an ancient quarry used by the Pharaohs to extract very hard flint stones to build giant and strong temples that are not affected by the factors of time. There is the obelisk that was not completed due to some technical defects and the impossibility of its use, and it was intended for Queen Hatshepsut. However, this temple has a special feature that resulted from the local worship in the place, where people worshipped two local gods, namely Sobek and Horus with the falcon head. Despite the difference in these two gods in origin and character, they lived side by side for many centuries without mixing or combining with each other.
Temple of Edfu.
The temple was dedicated to the main god Horus, identified as Apollo according to the Greek interpretation. It is one of the best-preserved shrines in Egypt. The temple was built during the Ptolemaic Kingdom, between 237 and 57 BC. The inscriptions on its walls provide important information about the language, mythology, and religion of the Hellenistic period in Egypt. In particular, the temple’s inscribed construction texts “provide details [both] of its construction and preserve information about the mythological interpretation of it and of all the other temples, such as the Island of Creation.”
