The dam is 3,600 meters long, 980 meters wide at its base, 40 meters wide at its crest, and 111 meters high. The dam body is made up of about 43 million cubic meters of cement, iron, and other materials, and a water flow of up to 11,000 cubic meters of water can pass through the dam per second.

Construction of the dam began in 1960 at a total cost of $1 billion, one-third of which was contributed by the Soviet Union. 400 Soviet experts participated in the construction of the dam and it was completed in 1968.
