Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square
The Egyptian Museum is one of the largest and most famous museums in the world, located in the heart of the Egyptian capital “Cairo” on the northern side of Tahrir Square. Its establishment dates back to 1835 and its location at the time was in Azbakeya Garden, where it contained a large number of diverse antiquities. Then came the Egyptologist Gaston Maspero and in 1902, during the reign of Khedive Abbas Hilmi II, opened the new museum building in its current location in the heart of Cairo.
The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM)
It is located a few miles west of Cairo near the Giza Pyramids. It is being built to be the world’s largest archaeological museum, accommodating 5 million visitors annually. In addition to commercial and entertainment buildings, a restoration center, and a museum garden that will be filled with trees known to the ancient Egyptians. Egypt has launched a campaign to finance the project, with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) as its main contributor, providing soft loans. The museum is set to house more than 100,000 artifacts from the Pharaonic, Greek and Roman eras, which will give a major boost to Egypt’s tourism sector.
The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC)
It is a museum located in the city of Fustat in Cairo, covering an area of 33.5 acres. The museum accommodates fifty thousand artifacts that tell the stages of development of Egyptian civilization, in addition to displaying the achievements of the Egyptian people in various areas of life from the dawn of history to the present time. It also contains models, photographs, manuscripts, oil paintings, artistic masterpieces and antiquities from the Stone Age, Pharaonic, Greco-Roman, Coptic, Arab, Sudanese and modern civilizations. It also includes the Royal Mummies Hall, which provides visitors with the atmosphere of the Valley of the Kings. The hall includes 20 royal mummies, including 18 kings and two queens from the Seventeenth to the Twentieth Dynasties. The most important of these mummies are the mummies of King Seqenenre, King Thutmose III, Queen Hatshepsut, King Ramses II and King Ramses III.
